Confidence in Vulnerability

Happy Friday,

Have you ever found strength in your vulnerability?

This week, I’ve been in a reflective space, spurred by two powerful conversations. Can we truly be confident in our vulnerability?

Last Thursday, we had an awesome LIVE Space centred around the topic of vulnerability.

My co-host, Jen Swift, shared that vulnerability is about us being open about our feelings and challenges. Yet, as we explored together with guests, this can be hugely challenging.  We can have fears of appearing weak or losing control as a leader, compounded by societal and cultural expectations that prevent us from being our authentic selves.

Yet, vulnerability can be a strength as a leader: one that fosters trust, strengthens relationships, and makes teamwork, well… work.

It’s interesting how that chat came about as that Tuesday I spoke with Dr Chris Baker on how we can develop self-efficacy. By that, I mean a leader's belief in their ability to meet challenges and achieve their goals. Chris and I explored the role of self-reflection in building our self-efficacy "muscles" and how small, actionable steps can boost our leadership confidence

This particularly resonated with me. How about you?

Chris warned about "self-efficacy lulls," or dips in confidence, especially during periods of change or when taking on new roles. Chris emphasised the importance of supportive networks when navigating these lulls, but to get that support, you guessed it, you need vulnerability.

Navigating our challenges with true authenticity can be hard, but there are tools. One is regular self-reflection. Sometimes, asking challenging questions of ourselves can open us up to asking others for feedback. And once we take that step, that's powerful vulnerability in action.

I explored how universities are increasingly prioritising internationalism and how this could be a golden opportunity for international students. Listen to the short reflection here.
